The European Commission, through CINEA, the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency, has granted the LIFE project to the consortium led by Global Omnium, named Turbines. The project focuses on the generation of hydroelectric power by harnessing the excess pressures that occur in the drinking water supply network of cities to obtain electricity from water turbine.
The objective of the project is to contribute to the decarbonization of the drinking water supply system and to provide accessible energy and water services to all citizens through the implementation of an energy recovery system by installing turbines, thus cooperating in the energy transition and creating climate-neutral cities.
LIFE Turbines has a duration of 42 months and will address four practical cases in Spain and Italy, three of them will be in facilities of the network managed by Global Omnium in the Valencian Community and Catalonia, the fourth case study will be the drinking water network of Sansano, managed by Acquedotto del Fiora.
The project has a budget of €2,518,001.04, of which the European Union finances 60% through the LIFE program, as it is a project aligned with the European Union’s objective for 2050, the Green Deal, and the Union’s Energy Strategy. The LIFE program is the only financial instrument of the European Union exclusively dedicated to the environment. Its objective for the period 2021-2027 is to contribute to the transition towards a clean, circular, energy-efficient, low-carbon, and climate-resilient economy, also through the transition to clean energies, to the protection and improvement of environmental quality.
LIFE Turbines will demonstrate that in any point of the supply network where there is a flow of water and a pressure difference, hydroelectric energy can be obtained and that, depending on the technical characteristics in each case, the produced energy can be used for different public and private purposes.
